The West Chester University Roller Hockey Club has been active since 1999. It was started under the leadership of WCU
Alum, Jeff Kropp through the Sports Club Council and the Student Activities Council, where it remains today as a University Club team.
Since 1999, the club has had at least two teams, Team Gold and Team Purple.
Team Gold plays competitively in the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (ECRHA), the division of National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA). Since entering the NCRHA in 2000-2001, they have placed nationally, within the final four two times, and the elite 8 two time. They have placed first in the regular season three times.
I
n 2003-2004 season the club saw many of its original core players move on to the real world lives after college. The team
took a sabbatical from ECRHA while playing in a Philadelphia Collegiate Roller Hockey League (PCRHL), and finishing as a runner ups during that season.
The following year Team Gold has made its comeback to the ECRHA. For the next 3 seasons WCU team has worked hard to reestablish its status as a powerhouse in the league. In 2006-2007 season Team Gold took it to an even higher level with a big addition to the club of new head coach Brian Sobel. Coach Sobel has brought his wealth of roller hockey coaching experience and his innovative coaching thinking.
With the accomplishments of their club mates, Team Purple has also enjoyed their own successes. Over the past 6
seasons in the Philadelphia Collegiate Roller Hockey League, the team has won one championship, while garnering playoff berths every season. In 2006-2007 season Team Purple took a big step of their own by moving up to ECRHA B division. No doubt the first season in ECRHA was a learning experience, but late in the season the team has proved that they belonged by beating several of the playoff bound teams.
The outlook for the club is as remarkable as its past, as incoming students will no doubt continue to fuel both Team Gold and Team Purple towards success.
